How can I make a windmill that just heats my hot water heater?
I want to make a windmill that powers one of the two elements in my hot water heater. I figure this is a good idea, since it will help out when the wind blows, and have no effect when it is not, except the reheat time will be longer.
I figure this is a good idea because I shouldn’t have to convert the power to 120 V & 60 Hz, which I assume is very wasteful.

Contractors installed new travertine tile in our ultra small powder room. I was appalled to find them stepping all over the tile. In fact, they even put in the toilet and vanity within hours of installing tile. Now just days later some tiles are somewhat uneven. The gas water heater vents through a chimney that shares space with a cold air return. With 2 vents in the space, the clicking noise can be quite loud near the vents. I’ve had the installer return and he replaced my fast-recovery water heater for one with much lower BTU’s, thinking that the chimney wouldn’t get as hot so less expansion/contraction but I still get the noise (of course not while the water heater was running while the plumber was there). What can I do about my water heater situation?
Our water heater broke and all the water leaked out. We now have to replace carpets in three rooms, and we had to buy a new water heater. The water heater is a 50 gallon, has a 12 year warranty, and it is only 5 years old. We contacted our insurance company and GE. The only reason why I’m asking this question is because of the news items on Comcast. In New York today, they had that horrible odor from natural gas all over the city. We had a branch take out the mast during the snow storm and the mast was bent. The power company cut our power due to the surge it caused. An electrician rewired up to the meter outside. A couple of weeks later we are having issues. The water heater quit working, we replaced it, but no power! Replacing the fuses, but one line of outlets in the kitchen seem to be weak or not working, too. It blew several appliances at the time of the surge. Could this be related? I am not sure where to go from here.

How long can our landlord leave us without running hot water?
Hot water is included in our rent, the hot water has been off since Friday, it is now Monday. The main boiler broke and our landlord does not want to fully replace it, just try and get plumbers to fix it. One already came out and fixed it and it broke again in about 4 hours. There are at least 50 units in the complex so that’s at least 200 people without running hot water.

Hi,
I currently have 2 boilers, 1 for the radiators and the other for hot water but my boiler for the radiator keeps drawing air into the system, preventing half of the radiators to work and the boiler is roughly 13 years old. So should I keep both boilers and repair the problem or just buy a combi boiler and get the problem sorted at the same time.

We need to get the drain valve out of our water heater. It is the orginal drain valve, but has corroded. It has some kind of cement holding it in place and we can’t move it at all with a wrench. My Mom rents her home. The cold water feed into the water heater sprung a leak in the copper pipe (the ~2 foot length connected to the unit).
The useless moron of a maintenance guy put a bolt-down clamp with rubber on it, but it didn’t fix it. So now instead of spraying against the wall, it’s running down onto the water heater.

It’s actually leaking from the top (lid) seam as well as from both water inlets on the top of the tank where there’s a pool of a gooey looking liquid pooled around them. The water heater will probably need to be replaced as it was installed in 2002 and I doubt it was ever cleaned. Just curious as to what would cause it to leak at the top.

Can some one help me on my peerless tank less boiler leaking?
Since last week, my water heater (a tankless oil burning, heater and hot water in one unit) has been leaking water in the fire chamber. At this time, it is heating the hot water to a certain degree. When the unit is off the water is leaking. The unit is 2 years old, and with the previous unit we had different type of problem, again Peerless brand, but a bigger one. The warranty covered the exchange, but this unit is much smaller than the first one. I called the company and they dont want to cover the second unit, so I have to repair it, any help is appreciated.

How can I fix my sometime leaky faucet?
My problem is the kitchen faucet doesn’t work sometimes. When I turn the knobs on (sometimes) it just drips and if I leave the knobs on for hours it will eventully start working just fine. Other times when I turn the knobs on it works just fine but sometimes it just shuts itself off. Other times it will work fine for days or weeks with no problems. This is the only faucet I’m having any problem with in the whole house.

There are several inches of water pooling in the center of each of the apartments. No water is on our side, but I’m worried about the structure of the building with that much water damage. We’ve started packing our stuff (we were planning on moving in the next few weeks). But now there is a large leak, and we are in the dead of winter. Sub zero temps, snow, etc–Chicago area.
Is it adviseable to stay in the building till we find a place, or should we just pack up and move immediately?

plumbing question . Ok every time I flush certain toilets in my house the drain in the basement floods?
This lets out a very bad smell if we flush anything or not. Rotor rooter told us we had a cracked pipe under our steps. We hired an independent guy who told us that the trees in the next yard roots were getting pipes clogged and our sewer needed snaking from the out side every few months. Rooter rooter wants at least 3,000 to repair the so-called pipe. Who is right and what exactly is happening. Why would this independent guy be dancing around this problem the rotor rooter diagnosed? Is there any way we can test the theory?

What are my rights if I have had a boiler fitted which has leaked and caused damage.?
Just had a new boiler fitted. Seems they did a poor job and now it has badly leaked and caused damage down one of my walls. Is the fitter or company who arranged the fitter liable for any damages?

why is my sump pump moving water into a tube that spits the water back out?
the tube connected to my sump pump spits all the pumped water back out after the pump finishes. I can’t find the outlet for the tube but it is in the direction of my septic system. Is that tube connected to my septic?

I have some water damage on the ceiling in my bathroom. Is there a certain profession out there that does these basic kind of repairs?

I am looking for a fast and CHEAP way to make aluminum powder the fastest way possible (the finer the better!!!). I do not have a blender to ruin or a coffee grinder or a bench grinder!!! I need it ASAP so please help!!!
P.S I’ve heard of putting aluminum into a alkaline base drain cleaner but it has a VERY HIGH possibility of an explosion, so I don’t want to use it! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a sump pump installed in my basement because the previous one stopped working. What else can I do?
After a rainy fall I still had some water in my basement. My house is 18 years old. I never had water in the basement before this year .What else can I do before the spring rains. I don’t have cracks in the basement. The new sump pump seems to be overloaded that is why I still had a some water after instillation coming from the sump pump area this past fall.

We are replacing our sump pump but have had heavy rain for the last week, and our sump pit is full of water. Do we need to bail the water out of the sump pit before removing the old pump and putting a new one in (with the electricity off, obviously), or wait for it to dry out? Is it possible to remove the old one and put the new one in without getting the water out of the pit first?

How do you clear a blocked drain, when draino didn't work?
Our washing machine connects to the sink, and when it empties into the sink the lint goes down the drain. We used a no-name version of draino and it didn’t work. Should we try it again? That stuff sketches me out ever since our first chemistry lab.
Also, we have a sort of screen thing to catch the lint in, if we can get it unblocked.
