how to plumbing: I had a sump pump installed in my basement because the previous one stopped working. What else can I do?

After a rainy fall I still had some water in my basement. My house is 18 years old. I never had water in the basement before this year .What else can I do before the spring rains. I don’t have cracks in the basement. The new sump pump seems to be overloaded that is why I still had a some water after instillation coming from the sump pump area this past fall.
